Neighborhood

In origin this area was called Largo del Mercatello (Wide of the Mercatello) since 1500, it was one of the two most important markets of the city, the current structure of Piazza Dante was assumed in the eighteenth century

In the middle of the square in 1871 the great statue of Dante Alighieri was built, then from that moment it assumed the actual denomination of Piazza Dante, the last important intervention of rearrangement was created during the work of subway in 2002 giving to everybody the chance reach comfortably the square.

From here you can stroll through of the historic streets of Naples until you reach the famous veiled Christ, the famous books stands of Port’Alba, the beautiful Monastery of Saint Chiara…
